    ABOUT POPE LEO XIV

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, made history on May 8, 2025, by becoming the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church—the first American and the first Augustinian friar to hold the papacy.

    Early Life and Education
Prevost was born to Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred Martínez, of Spanish heritage. He pursued his religious vocation with the Order of Saint Augustine, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University in 1977. He furthered his theological studies with a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He obtained licentiate and doctoral degrees in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

    Pastoral and Missionary Work
Ordained a priest in 1982, Prevost dedicated over two decades to missionary work in Peru, serving as a parish pastor, seminary teacher, and diocesan official. His leadership roles included Prior General of the Augustinian Order (2001–2013) and Bishop of Chiclayo (2015–2023). In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and he was elevated to cardinal the same year.

    Papal Election and Vision
Elected pope after four rounds of voting over two days, Leo XIV chose his papal name in homage to Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of workers' rights. In his first address, he emphasized peace, unity, and the Church's mission to be a beacon in a world often overshadowed by materialism.

    Theological and Social Perspectives
Pope Leo XIV is recognized for his moderate stance, balancing progressive social advocacy with traditional Church teachings. He supports synodality and inclusivity but maintains conservative views on issues like the ordination of women and same-sex relationships. His episcopal motto, "In illo uno unum" ("In the one [Christ] we are one"), reflects his commitment to unity within the Church.

Pope Leo XIV's election marks a significant moment in Church history, bringing a blend of American roots, Latin American pastoral experience, and Augustinian spirituality to the papacy.
